chapter forty-eight

The next thing Constanza knew, she was awake and in a bed. Her body didn’t hurt anymore and as her eyes focused, the sound of an ECG filled her ears. The repetitive beeping gave her something else to focus on and slowly she realized she was in a hospital.

Moving her head, she winced but didn’t pass out. That was good. It meant she was being taken care of by people with the right training. The thing, though, was that she didn’t remember getting moved from the church to a hospital and she felt her heartbeat spike. At the same time, the monitor next to her beeped faster, matching her own vital stats.

Calm down, Constanza told herself before taking a series of deep breaths. This was the only way to control her heart rate, apart from drugs and proper meditation. After another minute of deep breathing, the beeping from the monitor went back to a more regular and normal sounding rhythm.

With that done with, now Constanza could focus on where she was exactly, and try to get answers from someone.

Looking down at herself, she saw she was wearing a hospital gown and was tucked in under a blanket. The sight made her question where her clothes were and after a second of thought, she realized they’d most likely had been cut off of her body. Rollo’s going to kill me.

If she was in a hospital, then it would make sense that there were other patients or at least beds around her. She couldn’t think of a reason that she’d be in a private room. Unless something had gone wrong, and Annalisa Zucca had grabbed her.

No, Constanza thought, and shook her head. Pain shot from her forehead to her eyes and down through her spine. Everything went blurry, and she gasped from the feeling.

“Okay, I won’t do that again,” she said softly before glancing around the room and taking in her surroundings properly.

Directly opposite her was another bed. This one was empty, but it confirmed her suspicions. She was in a regular hospital wing. To the right of that bed was a nurse’s station. It was unmanned and Constanza had to strain to see if anyone else was in the room. After a second, she gave up and just accepted that she was alone.

Fine, means I can rest properly.

The thought was her natural reaction to the room, but it didn’t make her feel any better. She had questions that needed answering and without a nurse or a doctor around, the chances of that happening were slim to none.

Sitting there in the bed, Constanza smiled. She’d been extremely lucky to have survived everything she’d been through since getting to Italy. Even though Rollo Tomassi had done what he could, Constanza was positive that whoever had patched her up in the hospital had most likely gone over what the tailor had done. Depending on the prognosis, Constanza estimated that she’d be able to get moving again in a day or so.

That was her hope anyway and as she waited, hoping for another person to appear, she heard it.
